Movies & Choices
What kind of movie do we prefer watching and what does it depend on? Blockbuster or indie? Does the movie we enjoy watching and/or choose to watch say anything about our personalities or the state we‘re in? What about the movies we miss out on? Typical men movie: horror, technology, action- typically ladies: chick’s flicks and drama?! That easy? And what about anything in between? Do we stick with the movie genres we like or is there any growth going along with it? Do we watch movies once or are there some we enjoy watching repeatedly? Why do we sometimes think that a movie we watched (or stopped watching) is boring, while other people are waving about it and seem to get anything out of it. What does all this depend on? Why are we watching a movie at first place? What is the reason for it? Entertainment? Interest? Relaxing? Escape from reality? Boredom? Because others said it’s good?
All this has an effect on our choices and what we get out of movies. It might explain why we like or dislike what we’ve seen. It depends on our intelligence, interests, experiences… as well. It’s interesting when you read recommendations of various movies. Do you swim along with all the other fishes and only watch a movie everyone likes or do you go for the insider, that only a few might understand and gain something out of? Are you willing to take a risk?
There is a lot to look out for when you watch a movie: genres, story, actors, language, country of origin, atmosphere, title, cover, short summary, recommendations, film music, unique feature and lots more. Can we sympathyze with a movie? Do we agree with the content? Does it touch us? Can we learn from it? What kind of story-line do we expect? Expecting the unexpected? Looking for surprises? Or are we generally looking for a happy ending?
Have you ever wondered about all these things instead of only judging a movie with one word only, by calling it good or bad?! What kind of movie person are you? And how often do you watch movies?
I raised a lot of questions this time and you should not expect me to give answers. I’m only raising questions this time, as I think it’s an interesting attempt to look at us choosing, watching and judging movies. All this says something about our own personality. It is on us to find answers, find out what we like and don’t like, decide on watching the same old movies or stick with favorites genres or trying something new?! Maybe trying to watch a movies that is different? Maybe learning or feeling something new? Maybe finding a new approach? Maybe a new view on life?
I am very much looking forward to your ideas on this! Please leave a note with me here…
What were the last movies you watched? What was lasting to you in a good or bad way? Any special experiences you made through movies? Which question made you think the most?
Filme & Auswahl
So einfach? Unterhaltung? Interesse? Entspannen? Realitätsflucht? Langeweile?
I love the questions you posed and I think, for me, I generally watch movies to escape from reality. I love something that gives me hope and challenges the mind. Takes me on an adventure beyond what I know. I love action and excitement in movies. And I love a good suspense. Something to keep me on my toes. I guess that’s because my own life seems to lack that excitement in some way. Sad, but true. Lol. Really awesome post, Sovely. I love how you get the reader thinking on this one!

Thank you, dear Brandi. That’s what I was hoping for as I finished this post.
I started writing after I saw a movie today and could not decide on liking or disliking it. It was a slow one. I somehow got a message out of it. It made me raise a lot of questions that became part of this post… Yours, Sovely

You’re very welcome, Sovely! And I know what you mean by “slow movies”. Sometimes I try to force myself to finish a movie through to the end, even if it’s not fully making any sense to me. Like you, I’m hoping that I can pull something out of it. It’s usually towards the end of the movie that the message is conveyed. 😊 Hope you enjoy your day, my friend!

Thanks, Brandi!
Everyday that leaves me writing a statement and putting it online makes me satisfied in a way. It’s tiny baby steps. Same with movies, once I made the decision to watch one I mostly pull myself through it – giving it the chance to unfold it’s magic with it’s own words. 🙂 Enjoy your day, dear Brandi!

Sovely, I must admit I never used to watch movies or tv at all. But due to a turn of events in my life I found myself watching a lot of what I call mindless tv to except. I tend to like series show with strong female characters who saves the world and everyone in her life. 🙂 Love these ?’s ❤

I rarely watch a movie too, I don’t even have a TV for ages, so I’m using my computer if I’m up for a movie. In that case it really is a choice I made… Movies pretty much depend on my mood. I’m not really up for series, but I appreciate strong female characters too.

Wow that’s so interesting. I never watched tv till I injured my back and was forced to rest. So now I don’t mind watching it but I do love using my computer to watch too! ❤ xo

I think with movies it’s the same as with music or books – depends on what mood you are in or which mood you want to be in. Sometimes I need a Marvel blockbuster , but on other days only a Wim Wenders (Im Lauf der Zeit, Himmel über Berlin) or Tarkovsky will do. I am not into rom-coms but love the old ‘screw-ball’ comedies.. And I have found that films I had decided I didn’t think worth watching are surprisingly good when they finally come on to TV.. There are so many great films out there – too many to be able to watch in my lifetime. I’ve only ever walked out of one screening.. Anyway, thank you, dear Sovely, for the post to set me thinking!

Hi Wibi, thanks so much for your feeback. It’s always great hearing form you. Just the other day I was watching the old black & white movie “Die Kameliendame” from 1936 and thought about writing about it. Some movies are meant to stay, some are good for distraction or to touch hearts… yes, it depends on your mood. I hope you are well. All the best to you. Yours, Sovely
